The Hardware Société: Melbourne-Style Brunch in Montmartre, Paris

Sunday, March 19, 2017

Located in Montmartre, The Hardware Société is quickly becoming one of Paris' favourite brunch spots (as well as mine)! The restaurant originally opened in Melbourne, and made it's way to Paris earlier last year incorporating both Australian and French breakfast favourites into their menu.

My friend Megan and I were both so hungry once we got there and I went for their bircher muesli with saffron & vanilla quince, raspberry compote and pistachios, whereas Megan went for something more savoury, ordering the ragu of herbed mushrooms, pumpkin puree, brillat savarin (a type of cheese), pumpkin bread and 64 degree eggs.

The interior is beautiful and luminous with lots of greenery and colourful butterflies on the wall - if you're lucky enough to get a table at the back you have a cool view of rooftops of Montmartre.

I've been there twice now and it hasn't failed to disappoint. Hot drinks come with a little sweet treat, and the second time I went I had their special of the day which was fried brioche with a passion fruit & limoncello curd, raspberry gel, fresh raspberries, freeze-dried raspberries, lavender syrup and chanitlly which was honestly amazing

I would also really recommend getting one of their croissants purely because the jam that it comes with is incredible. It was a raspberry rose petal jam by la chambre aux confitures (link here) - I need to buy some for myself!

There is always a sweet and savoury special but here are some of their permanent dishes from their January menu (it has now changed but just to give you an idea of what kind of food they serve!)

  • Fried brioche with coffee infused pears, praline cheesecake, spiced blueberry compote
  • A sweet board with cardamon arroz con leche (rice pudding), churros, dulce de leche, citrus, mint & kirch salad
  • Continental breakfast with fromage blanc, granola, mulled wine pears, croissant & an orange juice
  • Baked eggs with either roasted pumpkin, creamed spinach and basil, gruyere, pepitas or chorizo, potato, piquillo peppers, queso manchego, toasted almonds & alioli
  • Confit duck with saffron braised beans, chorizo and spanish black pudding
  • Salmon millefeuille with apple, horseradish & salmon tartar, avocado, saffron alioli, celeriac & lime puree and 64 degree eggs
  • Eggs benedict with lobster, citrus hollandaise foam, soft herbs bun nois & 64 degree eggs
Drinks include coffee (obviously), with both dairy and non-dairy milk options, chai lattes, green teas, hot chocolates, artisan lemonades, juices and iced teas - we went for a green tea to share, which came in the cutest little knitted tea cosy (which you can also buy there).

As with many popular "instagram-friendly" aka bobo (french word for hipster) brunch spots in the city (Season, Paperboy, Holy Belly...) you have to get there early-ish unless you want to wait a while for a table. They don't take reservations, but if you arrive before 10:30 you should be able to get a place relatively quickly. If not, the restaurant is right by the Sacré-Coeur (map below) so you can always have a wander before your table is ready.

Prices for pastries and cakes range from 3-7 euros, main brunch dishes from 10-20 euros and drinks from 2.5-5 euros, so pretty standard for Paris.

It's open Wednesday to Monday from 9:00 to 16:00 (9:30 to 16:30 on Saturday and Sunday) and the best metro stops to get there would be: Abbesses (line 12), Anvers (line 2) & Château-rouge (line 4).

As far as I can tell there isn't a website but feel free to check out their instagram page to keep up to date and to check out more pictures of their food (which always looks divine) - link here!
